When the House You Loved Starts Making You Sick
We sat down with Wendy, a mother of two in Central Kentucky, who bravely shared one of the hardest chapters of her life. What began as a simple move to Lexington for a better future turned into a nightmare no one saw coming. Her story is about more than mold. It’s about health. It’s about being ignored. And it’s about finding hope when everything feels like it’s falling apart.
A Dream That Slowly Turned Into a Mystery
Wendy and her husband did what so many families do. They moved to Kentucky to be closer to loved ones. They found a quiet home, planned for their future, and started raising their kids. Everything felt right, until the day Wendy noticed something strange near a floor vent. At first, it looked like dust. Maybe just dirt. But what followed was a cascade of symptoms and suffering that no one could explain.
Her daughter developed constant fevers, rashes, and stopped speaking in full sentences. Her son, once active and thriving, was suddenly diagnosed with walking pneumonia and showed signs of neurological decline. Wendy herself was so exhausted she couldn’t stay awake after dropping her kids off at school. Her voice was giving out. Her vision blurred. Her hair was falling out. The house they loved was making them sick, and no one believed them.
Insurance Ignored Them. Doctors Missed It.
Wendy did everything right. She called contractors. She brought in her insurance company. She even asked doctors to dig deeper. But instead of answers, she got excuses. She was told to wipe mold with bleach and buy a kit from a hardware store. A kit. For a house that was slowly breaking her family down from the inside.
“I just wanted someone to help me,” Wendy told us. “My kids were sick. I was desperate. And they told me to go get a kit and handle it myself.”
She cried on the phone with her adjuster. She begged him to take it seriously. But no one came.
Then Everything Changed
When Wendy found us at Mold Dog Network, she wasn’t just looking for an inspection. She was looking for someone who would listen. Someone who would believe her. And most of all, someone who would fight for her family.
We brought in Mika, our trained mold detection K9. We ran full environmental testing. We listened to every word. What we found confirmed what Wendy already knew deep down. This was serious. This was affecting their air, their health, and their home.
A Family Fighting to Heal
Wendy’s family had to leave their home during the holidays and live in her parents’ basement. And within weeks, the coughing stopped. The rashes disappeared. Her daughter began talking again. The fog lifted.
“That was the moment we knew. It wasn’t in our heads. It was in our home.”
They’ve since returned to continue remediation. The battle with insurance is still ongoing. But now, they have allies. They have evidence. And most importantly, they have hope.
You Are Not Alone
Wendy chose to speak out because she doesn’t want anyone else to feel as lost and dismissed as she did.
“I’m not usually one to go on camera,” she said through tears. “But I want something good to come out of this. I want people to know there’s a way out.”
At Mold Dog Network, we’re working to educate families, support victims, and raise awareness about mold-related illness in Lexington and beyond. If you’re dealing with unexplained health symptoms in your home, listen to your gut. Ask the hard questions. And know this, there are people out there who will believe you.
The Light at the End
This isn’t the end of Wendy’s story. But it’s a turning point. It’s the moment the spiral stopped and the healing began. Her voice may have been ignored by insurance companies, but it won’t be ignored by us.
To Wendy and every family out there fighting to be heard, we see you. We hear you. And we’re with you.
